Versace Spring Summer 2013 RTW Preview

December 10, 2012 Posted by Mgguzman

By Yasmin Ghanem

Last Monday afternoon, I attended the Versace Spring Summer 2013 preview at the Grosvenor House Hotel. The collection showed nothing short of what was expected from Donatella, a strong powerful woman, which most of us can relate to or aspire to be.

I discovered that with the collection, Versace went back to its true self. The original sensation of the house was manifestly vibrating through every piece. There was a pervading Bohemian/gypsy inclination to the collection without it being glaringly obvious.
Tantalizing: everything you would want from Donatella Versace.

The collection included embellished tunics and separates of one color, complimented with leather belts and stringent color blocking of caramel, pale blue, orange, and yellow-green:all exhibiting the Versace we all have come to love, presume, and relish.

Lace was evident in most of the collection. Flattering silhouettes with a lingerie frontier of lace panels, either running down jeans exposing thighs, lace hot pants or lace cutouts on tailored over sized boyfriend jackets. The one thing about lace being present: it was all in the right places, to give it that soup-çon of allure, and calls for consolidation of effort (or possibly luck!) to avoid the kind of wardrobe mishap we all long to avoid.

The collection also included crumpled tie-dyed silks, which isn’t for the faint hearted, who cannot stand anything being un-ironed; But for us that loath ironing, we will gladly accept.

The accessories included coral colored handbags, fringed metals jewelry, giving the appearance of illustrious dripping gold and silver, and knee length pointed crisscross ankle strap gladiator style sandal boots, which took a foremost part center in this collection.

The collection was the nonchalant Versace goddess who dawns her gladiator sandals and best lingerie.

JIMMY CHOO Presents: CHOO 24/7 StyleMaker And Cruise 13

By Ushi Sato

Last Wednesday night, I attended the chic Jimmy Choo event featuring Cruise 2013 Collection at The Address Hotel, Dubai Mall.

Excellent collection for the crazy shoe lover, a range of flattering pairs, metallic and patent heels were presented like candies -with matching bags and clutches. It was a series of modern Jimmy Choo signature styles, as well as the hip and stylish trendy pieces that is perfect for today’s fashion. And while one lady passed out because of the overwhelming collection, I enjoyed the brand’s latest digital drama.

It was also the night of celebrating the newest Jimmy Choo fashion propaganda, the new Stylemaker’s website – www.choo.247.com which is an interactive site featuring photo galleries of street-style fashion images. It’s basically a website where you can upload a picture wearing a Jimmy Choo piece, which I find perfect for the attention grabber and narcissist – somewhat like me. :) The website is categorized in different sections according to location – Dubai, Doha, Paris, Japan. A selection of images from the best fans are uploaded and shared internationally reflecting Jimmy Choo’s style personality!

The idea isn’t new anymore, because it has been widely used by most of the fashion bloggers around the globe (eg. cookbook.nu), where promoting a brand through street-stye fashion, worn by normal people instead of calibre models is somewhat a new norm in terms of today’s fashion business propaganda.

Digital marketing has become the new idea for most fashion businesses, and it has been a phenomenal subject until now.

A Brazilian State of Mind – Havaianas 50th Birthday Party

Havaianas hosted their exuberant 50th Birthday bash at iKandy ultra lounge, Shangri-La Dubai on 21st November, spicing it up with their bona fide Brazilian themed night.

iKandy was kitted out with all things Brazilian and all things Havaianas, from giant Havaianas floating around the lounge, to home grown Brazilian DJs, to authentic Brazilian samba spectacles throughout the night, with a towering Havaianas birthday cake and birthday gifts for all, you could even leave a happy birthday video message for Havaianas!

The night was off to a bang with Brazilian dancer taking to the floor in illustrious Brazilian carnival costumes, parading brightly colored feathers and bejazzled wear and of course shaking it to the hottest Brazilian beats in Dubai.

The birthday cake was without a doubt something else. Golden, shimmering sparklers lit the night with mini Havaianas cupcakes lining the cake. There’s no guilt in a cake like that, even if I did go for seconds… We were rocking in Rio the whole night; Brazilian beverages were flowing partnering with laughs, only to top it off with the most relaxed, free and easy vibes of iKandy.

Born in 1962, Havaianas has brought us 50 years of unfailing savoir faire in the flip-flop world and inspiring more that ‘just a flip-flop’. Havaianas have taken the world by storm, undoubtedly being one of the very best.

With every flip-flop style to every color you could think imaginable possible, whether you want to keep it classy or go bold – what ever you want, I can guarantee you Havaianas have it! This year the brand is bringing you the spirit of ‘always summer’. With Havaianas you will be able to walk on Brazilian sunshine all day long, navigating your way through uneven sandy beaches, shopping until you drop or all the more rocking up to your fav à la mode coffee shop looking fluently stylish. What could be better than matching your flip-flops to any outfit you want to flaunt?

The sole police was on the hunt spotting socialites to fashionistas, snapping only the best shoes out on the town.

Thank you for a brilliant night, Happy 50th Birthday Havaianas!

Versace High Voltage Ready to Wear

By Zena Sari

The evidence is clear! And chronicles of the Versace Empire regaining its Golden Era momentum is definite. With the perfect balance of glamour and sophistication, the DNA of Versace illustrates just why the brand is Italy’s favorite House of Fashion Treasure.

Versace Autumn/ Winter 2012 event at Mall Of Emirates Dubai felt quiet an ostentatious affair. Like usual fashion events in Dubai, the attendees didn’t at all seem interested in the product itself, but rather appeared more concerned with making sure their pictures taken by every magazine photographer present. This new “fashion crowd” did include some regulars, like the randomly posing Dubai model and the waiters robotically refilling glasses of champagne. With my determination to observe this seasons design–and not the exhibitionists on display, I began to weave my way through strangers like a melody on a dance floor.

In true style, never shy of its exuberant styles, the ominous depiction of this season is ATTITUDE.

The controversial woman of edgy sophistication will cause noise when she reveals her sex appeal in a Versace defined leather piece. The black leather pieces inspired by the success of Rooney Mara, ‘Millennium’, included Goth pieces, crucifix printed fabrics, knee length leather dresses, leather jackets, fishnet impression leather knee high boots (upped the volume favorite of mine), with black and silver curve-hugging grommet style dresses..
Versace, synonymous for glitz & glam, in addition produced subdued above-the-knee dresses that feature leopard and cheetah prints of soft fabrics. Colors included bolts of bright orange and electric blue, striking combinations of black and white, reds as bright as Gwen Stefanis signature lipstick, and chrome yellows with expanded Versace letter prints.

Amongst the luscious fabrics was one item that signifies anything but discretion: the luscious raccoon fur jacket. Waist length and not over-the-top, the jacket adds elegance accompanied with any piece in the collection.

Accessories did not take caution either. To remain fashionable this season, it seems a waist hugging belt worn over an evening gown or dress is the new trend. Versace offered a multitude of bright colored leather belts; metallic gold and silver studs, Roman numeral symbols & diamond encrusted buckles adds optimized glam to any outfit.

The handbag; a long-lived essential omen that is never too far from a woman’s mind. Versace indulgence in the edgy rock sensuality combines flirty reds, and edge to satisfy the daring side of every woman. For the subtle conscious, Versace patent red leather bags render a flirty rapture of love, while the patent blacks remain classic and elegant. Our fatal attraction for handbags took me to the black, gold embellished filigree bag. This magnificent Italian creation symbolized gusto, an addition for the discerning taste.

Gianni Versace death left an absence in the empire. His brilliance was hard to match to which caused post designs to fail. The luxury label has been thrown out anomalous results that almost caused a collapse during the financial crisis. Out of darkness of a three-year hiatus, the label returned to profit with restructure and new chief executive Gian Giacomo Ferraris. Versace returned to the heart of Versace design philosophy.

Donatella Versace embodied courage as she revisited her brothers’ last and final collection. She went back to the era that marked history to find a ‘common’ by which included in Giannis designs that lead to success to cultivate the edgy rock, black leather attitude that is the absolute of this collection. Included, the Byzantine cross motif- the stand out piece that is the encrusted crucifix bustier; an unexpected shock factor to leave us so visually inspired.

In her moment of joy Ms Donatella summed up the collection as ‘strong femininity with parallel glamour’..

The future echoes… “I can look at it now with a smile,” she said. “I remember my last moments with Gianni, the rehearsal, the show. But finally I have freedom. I am not afraid.”

Gianni Versace ingenious legacy continues to live on!

Van Cleef & Arpels opens its first boutique in Jeddah and it’s about time!

October 14, 2012 Posted by Mgguzman

By Marriam M Mossalli

For FIVE years now, us Hejazi girls have had to endure the mockery of Riyadh being the first to host the renowned high jewelry French Maison Van Cleef & Arpels. October was finally our month, the inauguration of Van Cleef & Arpels debut boutique in Jeddah.
I didn’t show up fashionably late—I showed up “Saudi” late, which was great because I got to forgot the obligitary salutations and speeches and get straight to the good stuff: the jewelry! I was ushered into their VIP room, which resembles the intimacy and warmth of a Parisian apartment, and quickly began trying everything they would let me!

The highlight of the evening was that I got to wear one of Van Cleef & Arpels’ gorgeous Collier Zips! It was the legendary Duchess of Windsor, Wallis Simpson, who first suggested with the playful idea in 1938 to Renée Puissant, the daughter of founder Alfred Van Cleef and Estelle Arpels, of crafting a tedious mechanism in precious materials! But unlike her character in The King’s Speech, the real duchess never got to wear one because it wasn’t until the 1950s that technology caught up with the her imagination. By then, in true Wallis form, she was completely over it!

I don’t know about you, but I’m so completely UNDER it! All I want this Eid, is a Zip necklace—and perhaps a King to abdicate his throne for me… that wouldn’t be that bad either!

Located in Jameel Square on Tahliya, Jeddah’s prime destination for luxury, the sumptuous 183 square meter boutique opens its doors to the most discerning clientele and offers them an array of the most exquisite and refined creations of Van Cleef & Arpels.

The interior of the boutique is designed in powdery hues of pink and mauve that blends harmoniously with contrasting shades of grey, offering a soft and sophisticated décor. Smooth textures and refined materials, including fine leather, silk and velvet together enhance the charm of the new boutique.

On the opening of the first Van Cleef & Arpels in Jeddah, Mr. Alban Belloir stated: “We are thrilled about the opening of the new Van Cleef & Arpels boutique in Saudi Arabia, the first in Jeddah, bringing the enchanting world and beautiful jewelry creations of the Maison to the city. For over a century, Van Cleef & Arpels has represented the French spirit of High Jewelry, conveying the ultimate in elegance, femininity and savoir-faire that we relish in providing to our sophisticated clientele and fine jewelry aficionados in Jeddah today.”

Jeddah’s Event Of The Year

October 12, 2011 Posted by Mgguzman

By Marriam N Mossalli

Last Sunday, the women of Jeddah’s elite fashion scene were invited to attend the most-talked about event of the year: The Carolina Herrera and Zahra Breast Cancer Association’s Gala Dinner at the Park Hyatt. Instead, replacement attendees showed up, making mediocre attempts to appear fashionable and conducting themselves in a manner that was anything but elite.
If this opening sounds too harsh for an awareness event with only the best of intentions, it’s really not. In fact, it’s rather sugarcoated due to the fact that the initiative is for one of the most relevant issues affecting Saudi women today. Sadly, the reality is that perhaps such a high-caliber event was too soon for some women in society who obviously have yet to acquire the proper decorum for such functions.
The Herreras and Zahra Breast Cancer Association team, from Princess Haifa bint Al-Faisal and the committed doctors to the selfless volunteers and administers, were class personified. Unfortunately, the compliments stop there. Dedicated guest speakers addressed a brazen audience, who filled the ballroom with cancer-causing second-hand smoke and vulgarly chatted amongst themselves while cell phones rang incessantly. Aside from this probably being the first cancer awareness event where smoking was not only accepted, but encouraged with ashtrays conveniently set out among the tables of women, the event garnered a crowd that seemed more eager to be seen than see the seriousness of the issue at hand.
“I think their biggest mistake was trying to make money by selling the tickets through the wrong people,” stated one of Jeddah’s known fashionistas, Bayan Abuzinadah. “Maybe if they had exclusive invitations only, they would’ve made more money from the auction and donations! And speaking of the auction?” she added, referring to the promise of the auction of exclusive Carolina Herrera New York designs that never happened.

“When the lady called to invite me, she said that the invites were to very selective people, but when she called back to ask for recommendations, I realized that might not be the case,” revealed industry-insider Nour Kelani, “When I worked for Al-Sawani, the CEO say that people like us represent 10 percent of the society. After yesterday’s event, I’m guessing we’re less than 5 percent!”
As the kind and brave, Ola Al Marzoky took the stage to courageously tell her personal battle with breast cancer, the lack of etiquette and obnoxious behavior of the crowd reached its peak. A few tables, including Herrera’s, which included her daughter, Carolina Herrera Baez, the benevolent Princess Haifa and her sister, Princess Ola, stood apart from the sea of unabashed women.

In fact, there were people there to support the cause. There were even people interested in learning more about the disease, which plagues women in Saudi Arabia at an even younger age than most countries (more than 40 percent of diagnosed cases are women under 40, while in the US, the number is only 5 percent). Unfortunately, these women were probably unable to decipher much of anything due to the inconsiderate behavior of the majority of the women present.
Dr. Mona of Zahra Breast Cancer Association presented the clinical side toward the initiative and encouraged women to routinely do self-examinations and have regular check-ups with a medical professional, while Princess Haifa humbly revealed the uncompromising dedication required to chair one of Saudi Arabia’s most important associations. “It is a great pleasure to have Carolina Herrera, and her daughter here to support our cause,” thanked Princess Haifa.
Geoffrey Beene Lifetime Achievement Award winner Carolina Herrera spoke of her happiness to finally visit Saudi Arabia and her personal mission to use her legendary status for good.

“This cause is very close to my heart,” stated Herrera. “I am very happy to be part of this special collaboration with the Zahra Breast Cancer Association and especially, Princess Haifa.” She went on to say that such initiatives were important tools to spread “strength, love and hope” to women and their families affected by the disease. “And, if we plan to fight this, I hope that we can all come together, from all over the world, as one,” concluded Herrera.
Overall, collaborative initiatives, such as this one are a step in the right direction. They attract people, who wouldn’t necessarily attend such functions, and help facilitate these initiatives’ advancement into the mainstream. Unfortunately, the concept for them is still very new in our female society, which is only familiar with pure social gatherings. Hopefully, this event acts as a learning curve to future philanthropic collaborations. The organizers should firstly filter invitees by slowly introducing new echelons of society, while indirectly coaching the proper protocol of such functions.

The Zahra Breast Cancer Association, Princess Haifa, and the Herreras should be applauded for their efforts. But if this event is a litmus test of how we women in Saudi Arabia are progressing in the realm of appropriate conduct, we have quite a journey ahead of us.
