Brad Pitt, Nicole Kidman and Audrey Tautou have all fronted Chanel No.5 campaigns, but the famous fragrance’s latest face is none other than Marilyn Monroe. New print and television campaigns, due to launch in December, centre around the late actress’s famous declaration that she wore nothing in bed but a few drops of Chanel No.5, after the fashion house discovered an unreleased recording capturing Monroe’s original words.

“You know, they ask me questions. Just an example: ‘What real viagra without prescription do you wear to bed? A pyjama top? The bottoms of the pyjamas? A nightgown?‘ So I said: ‘Chanel No.5‘, because it’s the truth,” said Monroe in the 1960 recording. “And yet, I don’t want to say ‘nude’. But it’s the truth!“

The actress first made the confession to Life magazine in 1952 and the quote remains one of the actress’s most memorable. There certainly aren’t many fragrances which can boast the allegiance of one of the most famous faces of all time – and the new campaign will be Chanel’s first to celebrate the relationship. The fragrance, which launched in 1921, was the subject of an exhibition in Paris earlier this year.
