Two weeks ahead of the premiere of Nicole Kidman’s Grace Kelly film, Grace of Monaco, which is set to open this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Kelly’s children have issued a statement in which they unequivocally dismiss the project.

In a joint statement, the three children of the late actress, style icon, and princess—Prince Albert of Monaco, Princess Caroline, and Princess Stephanie—claim that the upcoming film, from director Olivier Dahan (La Vie en Rose), was based on “erroneous and dubious historical references.”

Per Reuters, the three also allege that the director and producer “refused to take into account observations the palace had made which ‘called into question the entire script and the characters of the film.’”

Furthermore, the three declare that “the trailer appears to be a farce and confirms the totally fictional nature of this film.” In case anyone is unclear about their stance on the project, the statement concludes, “The Princely Family does not in any way wish to be associated with this film which reflects no reality and regrets that its history has been misappropriated for purely commercial purposes.”

As evidenced by the trailer above, the film suggests that Kelly suffered an identity crisis while married to Monaco’s Prince Rainier III, during which she wondered whether she should return to Hollywood and work again as an actress.

This is not the first time that Monaco’s royal family has publicly criticized the project. In January of last year, Prince Albert described the film as “needlessly glamorised and historically inaccurate.” In turn, both Kidman and the director have insisted that their film is not a biopic as much as it is a character study.
